C130 Visit

The weekend of 15,16th March 2008 saw a visit to the HARS complex at IRA by a RAAF C130 Hercules aircraft. The event was a follow-up to the previous weekend's "Wings over The Illawarra", taking Airforce Cadets for local flights and allowing HARS members a good "look-over".

Annual Inspections

The inspection on CAC Winjeel VH HFE was completed mid-August, and it is now servicable. Now Cessna 310 VH REK has followed it into the hanger for its turn in the inspection bay. News thanks to Jim Marshall.

Aircraft Restoration Projects

Work has commenced on paint stripping the Catalina.
Part of the tail has been removed, and now the rear fuselage has also been started.
This overhaul is in preparation for her attendance at the RAAF birthday celebrations at Richmond in October.

On Saturday 22nd July, the Connie had all four R3350 engines run up satisfactorily, as preparations continue for her flight to Kalgoorlie.
Neptune 147566 also had both radial and turbine engines run up on this day.

Mustang over the Illawarra

Mustang VH-BOB is now operating from the Illawarra Regional Airport. VH-BOB will be here until Sunday the 7th of May.

60TH ANNIVERSARY OF P.O.W.’S RETURN TO AUSTRALIA

This Friday the 16th September is the 60th anniversary of the return of Australian prisoners of war from Japan after many years of brutality and hardship working as forced labourers in mines and factories. The Australians arrived at Rose Bay on Sydney Harbour in a fleet of nine (9) R.A.A.F. Catalina Flying Boats to an amazing welcome from Sydneysiders so soon after the end of World War 11.

NASA Plans Launched

A NASA-style learning centre for students could be established at Illawarra Regional Airport if corporate sponsorship is forthcoming.

It's the dream of Historical Aircraft Restoration Society (HARS) president and chief pilot Bob De La Hunty, who on Friday accepted the centre's first donation from Illawarra Credit Union chief executive officer Michael Halloran.

'Old Bus' In HARS Care

The well-known Fokker F.VIIB-3m 'Southern Cross' replica which was built at Murray Bridge in South Australia as a bicentenial project in 1988 is to be gifted by the South Australian Government to HARS, after a gruelling 'expression of interest' period starting June 2003 in which our Society competed with three other organisations for the privelege and responsibility.

Day Of The Cat

Sunday, 5 October, at about 5.30 in the evening and just as the sun was setting, Catalina VH-PBZ 'Felix' appeared as a bright star to the north east of Illawarra Regional Airport, inbound after a two-and-a-half week ferry flight from France.
