HARS rolls out for ANZAC day

ANZAC day 2010 provided a unique opportunity for the HARS maintenance and flying crews to roll-out the unique and diverse aircraft fleet in honour of servicemen and women past and present. Participating in the ANZAC day flyovers were the PBY Catalina, Cessna 180, CAC Winjeel, C-47 Dakota and the Lockheed Neptune. Many thanks to the HARS members involved in the preparation and readiness of the ANZAC day flyover aircraft – Congratulations on another great event.

Southern Cross Wing En-Route

April 14th, 2010 will see the much anticipated Southern Cross wing arrive to the HARS restoration workshops. On its arrival it will be unloaded into the Museum hangar where it will undergo detailed examination by the restoration engineers. Having been damaged on its last flight, the large and delicate timber wing requires repairs to the outer 20 ft of its span. Following its repair it will be re-mated to the Southern Cross.

HARS attends Canberra Airport Open Day

Canberra Airport played host to a range of unique and interesting aircraft exhibits at this years open day, Sunday 28th March 2010. Clear skies and beautiful autumn weather played host to a large crowd of interested spectators and aviation enthusiasts. On display were the HARS Super Constellation, Dakota C47, Neptune and PBY Catalina. The event was a great success with Canberra Airport management presenting a well organised open day to thousands of eager spectators.

A special thank you to the Canberra Airport team for inviting the HARS fleet along and we look forward to seeing you all next year.

Mustang Flights joins HARS for WOI 2010

HARS welcomed the Mustang Flights team from Queensland, arriving to help celebrate Wings Over Illawarra 2010 with their own special brand of aviation. The familiar and immediately recognisable sound of the P51 Mustang filled the skies of Albion Park Airport as they displayed their historic WW2 machine.

HARS members Brian Kelley and Bill Andronicos couldnt resist the temptation, each taking part in an exciting adventure flight in the CAC Mustang.

The Mustang Flights team will be returning to Albion Park on Friday the 12th and Saturday the 13th March 2010, so if you’re interested in being part of history, come on down and talk to the Mustang Flights team about taking an adventure flight. CALL 0415 577 724 to make a booking.

HARS hosts RAAF FA/18

Following a spectacular high-energy display at the Wings Over Illawarra Open Day 2010, RAAF Hornet A21-54 and its pilot, James Atkinson, took a couple of days rest and relaxation, soaking up the atmosphere at HARS headquarters. Plenty of HARS members were on hand to help out, providing a unique photo opportunity.

Thank you to the RAAF for entrusting us with this magnificent flying machine, we look forward to seeing the RAAF and the FA/18 back at HARS soon.

Wings Over Illawarra 2010 – Open Day

Dont miss the Wings Over Illawarra Open Day, 28th February 2010. Join HARS as we roll out and celebrate aviation history, restoration and preservaton. Get up close and personal with the entire HARS aircraft fleet and discover the magic of aviation.

Gates open at 9:30am, Sunday 28th February 2010. Admission is $15 per adult,$5 per child, $10 concession and $40 per family. Parking is available inside the airport grounds at $5 per car. Proceeds will support the Illawarra Schools for Autistic Children.

Sit in the world famous ‘Connie’ Lockheed Super Constellation. The airliner of the 1950s that conquered the world. Get up close and personal with two Neptune bombers.

Have your photo taken with ‘Felix’ who proudly represents the ‘Black Cat’ Catalina Squadron of the RAAF. Venture aboard the flying troop carriers of World War 2, the C47 Dakota.

HARS invites you to come aboard ‘Connie’ and the C47 Dakota. Also view our extensive historic fleet aircraft and enjoy a fun filled, educational day for all.

Open to the public 9.30am to 3.30pm seven days a week except Christmas Day and Good Friday.

Cordoba, Spain – Engine Recovery Mission – Day 2

Day 2 of the Engine Recovery Mission in Spain was both a good news and bad news day. HARS member “Reg” was lucky enough to celebrate his 69th Birthday! The bad news however, was that HARS member Eric Favelle has all the symtoms of a detaching retina, so Eric is on his way home.

The rain in Spain falls mainly on the plane! We ended the day with showers which have descended into rain. Likewise tomorrow with more rain expected on thursday. All engines on our a/c are ready to come off, but #4 will probably be the last.

A special thanks to the Cordoba Aeropuerto maintenance/cropdusting facility who are being exemplary in their assistance to the HARS team. Liaison with the Swiss goes from strength to strenghth. Francesco arrives Friday and one of their sponsors Thursday. We’re VERY happy with what we’ve achieved.

We are off to LON tomorrow starting with the train after brekky!

Cordoba, Spain – Engine Recovery Mission Day 1

As part of the Historical Aircraft Restoration Soceity engine acquisition and rebuild programme, a team of dedicated HARS engineers have travelled to Cordoba, Spain, to recover four radial engines and propellors.

The team arrived at sunrise (08:30, due to a combination of longitude and daylight saving) and was provided direct access to the recovery site. The team wasted no time in getting into the task of undertaking the removal of the four engines and propellors. From the attached photos you can see the two tired DC-7C’s on which the team spent a solid 8 hour day converting it to engine and prop spares!

DC4 Completes Four Engine Run

The HARS DC4 recovery team have this week achieved an important milestone, with the running of all four engines at Brisbane’s Archerfield Airport. With the first of a series of four engine runs now completed the DC-4 recovery team will focus their energies on the outstanding issues that will require completion prior to the delivery/ferry flight. Congratulations to the team and we’re all looking forward to seeing this rare bird take flight again.
